With over 1,200 employees dedicated to excellence, Facilities Management is responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair and maintenance of UVA's buildings, infrastructure and grounds as well as other University-owned and leased properties. The UVA Office for Sustainability is seeking an Energy and Sustainability Engineer to contribute to developing solutions to meet university-wide goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption, and overall environmental stewardship. The Energy and Sustainability Engineer focuses on implementing innovative projects that incorporate best practices in sustainability and conservation in the use of energy, water, raw materials, and other resources through retro-commissioning, energy audits and technical analyses. He/she will identify, vet, and implement projects to improve O&M, enhance building automation and energy management systems through field improvements and software programming, ensuring accurate metering and billing, and advocating for sustainability. The incumbent supports the goals of providing consistent, cost-effective, and efficient use of energy and other natural resources by applying expertise and knowledge of building systems to inspect, evaluate, analyze, and solve complex building mechanical, electrical, controls, and plumbing deficiencies. Working independently, the incumbent supports complex and technical energy programs, in addition to providing guidance to colleagues. Duties Include: Assist Architects and Engineers in conducting energy audits by visiting buildings with them, coordinating meetings with appropriate personnel on site, communicating with related vendors, and completing related administrative processes. Discover the source of deficiencies in building systems. Recommend retro-commissioning options for buildings that support the University goals. Ensure compliance with recommendations based on the energy audits, which includes following a schedule, creating a budget, implementing plans, coordinating team meetings, and tracking progress. Document and report on interim progress and final completion of all initiatives. Assist in reviewing estimated to actual performance. Collaborate with engineers, vendors, maintenance staff, and operations in the implementation and evaluation of modifications to reduce energy usage. Identify and instruct key team members to implement recommendations, including organizing all necessary trade disciplines and vendors and ordering parts and materials. Provide technical expertise in making decisions and evaluating economic feasibility of developing innovative energy and controls technology. Provide job site management to trades and sub-contractors by ensuring they understand and meet clear and realistic expectations, receive constructive and consistent feedback, and comply with safety practices. In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned. Position Compensation Range: $82,000.00 - $92,000.00 Annual Required Qualifications: Education: Bachelor's degree or higher in architecture, landscape architecture, land use planning, environment planning, engineering, or environmental science. Experience: Seven years of related experience, which may include HVAC design, controls engineering, sustainability consulting, LEED certification, etc. Licensure: Accreditation as a LEED professional, registered as a Certified Energy Manager, or professional license as a engineer (PE). For this position, the selected candidate will need to complete the following background checks: criminal,sexual offender and degree validation. Physical Demands: This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require walking some distance to attend meetings and programs, as well as visits to job sites.
