Job Description

Apex Clean Energy is seeking a Manager of Health and Safety to join our small but growing Health and Safety Team. Reporting to the Director of Health and Safety, this position will be solely responsible for supporting the development and implementation of Apex's safety program to our Site Operations Team. In this role, you will work to support all HSE functions, processes, and procedures for our utility-scale wind and solar assets in operation, currently at 2.5GW.

The Manager of Health and Safety will travel extensively to our operational sites across the United States to support Site Operational leadership in addressing HSE issues and concerns while working closely with the Director of Health and Safety in implementing processes for improvements. This person will also work closely with OEM contractors in maintaining compliance with Apex requirements, as well as conducting periodic site safety audits to coach site teams in managing good safety compliance. He/she shall also participate in or lead incident investigations. This individual will be required to travel to all field operations sites and occasionally those under development.

The successful candidate shall possess the personal skills to lead safety through leadership culture, by building relationships and influencing behaviors through conversation and coaching. The candidate shall have the ability to have one-on-one and group safety conversations that improves personnel behaviors and safety relationships. This individual shall also possess the skills to develop safety trending data for monthly safety reports. Proficiency in Microsoft (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio) is also required.

The successful candidate should have a good history of supporting fast-paced field operations and activity, with a solid track record of providing support and guidance to operational site leadership. The candidate should also possess the ability to work well with and provide guidance to contractors. This individual should have a good work history of developing procedures, conducting monthly safety meetings, providing site safety coaching, and providing direction on completing correcting actions following incidents or near misses.

  • Office Location: Headquarters in Charlottesville, VA or satellite office outside of Minneapolis, MN. Remote/hybrid will be considered for the right candidate.
    Primary Responsibilities
    • Accountable for Apex's health and safety program for our operational fleet
    • Accountable for all regulatory and safety oversight for a growing asset base across the United States and in Canada including Apex employees and vendors, partners, clients, and project stakeholders
    • Develop, train, and lead incident and emergency response program
    • Develop crisis management plans and lead crisis management and response
    • Develop and manage Energy Risk Matrix and other risk assessment tools
    • Responsible for continuous improvement initiatives and health and safety strategy for Operational Site Team
    • Demonstrate a personal commitment to health and safety excellence and enable safe working environments and strong safety culture across all environments
    • Monitor regulatory compliance, compliance with Apex safety program requirements, accident investigation and documentation, OSHA efforts, and safety training
    • Implement, motivate, educate and enforce Apex's health and safety policies
    • Manage the safety training program and ensure training is completed on applicable safety bulletins, memos, Safety Alerts, health and safety procedures/programs, first aid and emergency response, and other training
    • With facility management, oversee contractor health and safety performance. Ensure contractors are properly trained, use appropriate tools and equipment and protect all employees from injury
    • Continually monitor the performance and effectiveness of the facility safety program and implement adjustments and improvements as needed
    • Manage all aspects of our safety reporting and maintain the facility health and safety records
    • Actively monitor work safety in the field on a very frequent basis. Conduct formal and informal safety reviews, audits, reporting. When necessary, stop potential unsafe behaviors in the field when observed and coach employees on the proper method. Also provide positive recognition for safe behaviors
    • Work with site personnel to secure accident scenes when appropriate, ensure the medical treatment of affected employee and/or contract employee, and investigate near miss, first aid, recordable injuries, on site vehicle incidents or incidents related to plant vehicles, and general safety concerns
    • Assist/Coordinate recommendations for corrective actions and track to completion
    • Manage accident investigations, root cause analyses, and related reporting
    • Manage the Department of Transportation (DOT) Program for Site and Over-the-Road drivers
    • Work with site personnel and contractors to assure fire system inspection, testing, and functionality
    • Primary contact with the site's health clinic. Schedule annual physical exams, hearing tests, and/or respirator evaluations
    • Contribute to improvements in quantitative and qualitative approaches to drive workplace process improvements
    • Performs all other job duties and responsibilities as assigned
      Qualifications
      • Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Construction Safety, or related
      • At least 5 years of experience leading health and safety programs, preferably with emphasis on operational or construction safety in the energy industry
      • Experience as a First Responder
      • Certifications Obtained to include: OSHA 30-hour safety course, OSHA 500 or 501, Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER), and 40 hour current First Aid/CPR training. Lead Awareness Certifications such as CSP, CIH, OHST, CHST and CMSP considered a strong asset
      • Extensive experience applying OSHA and related state health and safety regulations
      • Extensive experience creating and managing health and safety programs, policies, and procedures for operational field/site environments
      • Knowledge in the construction and Operations and Maintenance of wind and/or solar energy facilities, preferred
      • High voltage and sub-station maintenance experience
      • Familiarity with mechanical and electronic testing equipment (i.e. voltage testers, amp clamps, oscilloscopes, and various hand and power tools)
      • Knowledge of heavy equipment for facility maintenance and working knowledge of crane and rigging requirements
      • Record of achieving results through rigorous application of regulations
      • Self-directed, action-oriented, forward-thinking and organized with high ethical standards
      • Extensive experience with accident investigation and corrective action development
      • Experience deploying health and safety audits and assessments
      • Experience working with contractors
      • Ability to manage multiple priorities concurrently and build consensus among all stakeholders
      • Demonstrated ability to lead change in the face of adversity; to challenge the status quo constructively
      • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
      • Proficiency in using Microsoft (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio)
      • Strong troubleshooting and problem-resolution skills. Strong in improving processes, and operational effectiveness to reduce safety hazards.
      • Superior organizational abilities
      • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients and customers
      • Must be able to pass a background check and be allowed access to federal installations
      • Must have a Valid Driver's License
      • Willing to work evenings and weekends on a non-routine basis if needed to support facility operations
      • Willing and able to travel on a regular basis (35-50%) to construction, operating, and corporate sites
      • Able to stand or sit for sustained periods of time. Able to climb stairs and ladders; Able to lift equipment that can weigh up to 50 pounds. May need to wear personal protective equipment including respiratory protection, fall protection, safety boots, protective clothing, hearing protection, and gloves.

        Work Environment

        Works in both an indoor office environment and an outdoor environment, occasionally at night which may be subject to inclement weather. Extended hours may be required to complete scheduled repairs.
