General Summary

This position in the Charlottesville Police Department performs responsible technical work in the development, maintenance, issuance and inventory of parts for a fleet of light, medium and/or heavy vehicles and equipment. This position also assists in the assignment of tasks related to other logistical work as assigned. Does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Logistics Supervisor.

The hiring amount will be between $16.00 and $21.84 an hour ($33,281.06 to $45,427.20 annually).Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. This is a full-time, non-exempt, position. Essential Responsibilities and Duties

* Assists in the management of preventative maintenance and repairs inspections of automotive equipment.
* Performs miscellaneous logistical related tasks and other related facilities.
* Inspects vehicles for cleanliness, damage, and compliance.
* Operates a variety of specialized equipment to include medium duty trucks, trailers, and UTVs.
* Receives, handles, stores, and issues parts and supplies.


* Arranges for purchase, order and delivery of required parts and supplies.


* Maintains storage of and accountability for on-hand stock.


* Develops and maintains stockage objectives, reorder points, economic order quantities, cost favorable suppliers, and time sensitive or operationally critical parts lists.


* Maintains parts manual library.


* Maintains bench stocks.


* Conducts periodic inventories and location surveys.


* Coordinates ordering activities with Purchasing and Finance.


* Researches spare parts and supplies availability by part number, stock number, manufacturer, substitute item, higher assembly, fabrication or other available sources, to provide economic and timely support.


* Packages and ships assemblies for return repair or rebuild.


* Performs property disposal functions, as necessary.


* Coordinates with suppliers, manufactures, warehouse distributors, jobbers, dealers and salespersons to obtain necessary supplies and parts.


* Picks up and/or delivers parts, when required.


* Prepares and maintains manual and automated records, inventories and statistical information.


* Prepares computer data input and utilizes resultant reports to assists in the management of the repair parts program.


* Analyzes statistical data and reports to ascertain trends, conformance to standards, efficiency and projected requirements.


* Provides parts for deferred maintenance.


* Assists in the assignment of tasks to mechanics engaged in the repair and maintenance of municipal automotive equipment. Determines priorities, enters work orders and monitors status of work orders.


* Performs related tasks as assigned.

Education, Experience and Skills

Minimum Requirements:

* Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma/GED.
* (If no diploma or GED, minimally must completed education through tenth grade with four years of highly relevant work experience in the automotive, truck or specialized motorized equipment field directly related to the purchase, stockage, issue, sales and/or accountability for parts and supplies.)


* Minimum of 2 years of experience in the automotive, truck or specialized motorized equipment field directly related to the purchase, stockage, issue, sales and/or accountability for parts and supplies.
* Possession of a valid, appropriate, driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia by employment start date and must be eligible to operate a City vehicle (To view our driving eligibility requirements, visithttps://www.charlottesville.gov/faq.aspx?qid=166).

Skills: Thorough knowledge of acquisition, storage, accountability and issue of spare parts and supplies relating to the automotive/motorized equipment field; General knowledge of automotive systems and maintenance functions; Ability to establish and maintain administrative records and reports; ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of personnel, both orally and in writing; Ability to work independently with minimal supervision; Must have absolute integrity and be innovative; Strong computer skills including experience with Microsoft Office and automated systems; General knowledge of common business methods; General knowledge of automated purchasing and inventory systems. Requires the ability to perform strenuous manual labor requiring considerable walking, lifting, reaching, climbing, stooping, pushing, pulling, and carrying. Must be able to frequently lift 10-50 lbs and occasionally move up to 100 lbs. The employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and outside weather conditions requiring the use of appropriate protective equipment.
