This position is key to shaping the future vision for Darden in tech-among students, alumni, employers, and faculty-and then executing against it. The Director/Senior Director develops and drives mission-critical programs by engaging a broad coalition of stakeholders around initiatives that improve Darden's engagement with and relevance in technology.Technology is a growing focus area for the Batten Institute. This role is instrumental in helping make technology, over time, a co-equal pillar to our historic focus on entrepreneurship, by cohering myriad activities happening at the school and driving net new ones. Our opportunity is to play a vital co-curricular role in equipping students - across program formats - to lead organizations that will invariably have technological innovation and disruption at their core.The Director/Senior Director will develop and foster a strong network of advocates and advisors for Darden in the tech sector, in Washington D.C. Metro, Silicon Valley and other tech ecosystems across the United States and globally. The cultivation of this community is foundational to the school's ability to deliver a suite of ever-evolving programmatic offerings that support faculty initiatives related to tech and to tech-fueled innovation (including AI) and to enhance and amplify the Darden student experience.This position can be located in Charlottesville, VA; the Washington, DC Metro Area; or the San Francisco Bay Area. The Director/Senior Director reports directly to the Batten Institute Executive Director and collaborates closely with departments across the enterprise, and potentially schools across the larger University. Primary stakeholders and related responsibilities include: Leadership:

  • Coordinate efforts across Darden under the umbrella of the Batten Institute Tech Hub as a clearinghouse for tech information and collaboration supporting thought leadership, faculty engagement, and external stakeholder management Programming:
    • Share leadership and project management responsibilities related to student programming (aside the Senior Director, Tech Sector Careers in the Career Center); potentially including at least one new flagship tech event in the fall, boot camps, speaker series, mentorships, ecosystem immersions, independent studies, internships/fellowships
    • Help run regular tech-based workshops including a new "Tech Learning Series"
    • Launch a "Tech Fellows" practicum in which students who are interested in tech can get real-world project work with tech companies or startups Faculty and Thought Leadership:
      • Selectively liaise with faculty in the tech area, and the Batten thought leadership team, to help articulate points of view on happenings in tech and to tell the story of Darden in the sector
      • Support opportunities for Darden convenings and engagement events to bridge theory and practice
      • Serve as a partner in the Intelligence Initiative discussionsImpact Measurement and Alumni Engagement:
        • Help codify alumni presence and longitudinal impact in tech sector / tech roles
        • Partner with Office of Engagement to develop meaningful and ongoing engagement with alumni in the tech sector or working in tech-intensive roles across sectors
        • Facilitate regular engagement for alumni with faculty, students and stakeholders through Batten Institute programmingCareers:
          • As an affiliate of the Career Center coaching team, collaborate with Senior Director, Tech Sector Careers with offerings for students interested in the tech sector through 1:1 student meetings, partnerships with the Technology Club, etc.
          • Support student organizations (including Tech Club) and Darden Career Center to develop and enhance career education/programming related to careers in technology across all business sectors
          • Partner with the Career Center to enhance and maintain a network of alumni and corporate recruiters that appeal to MBA job seekers
          • Integrate with the Career Center approaches and programming to help support students exploring careers in IT/technology functions and in the tech sectorMarketing & Communications:
            • Help raise the profile of Darden in tech through informing larger brand and marketing campaigns, including capturing alumni stories and successes in tech
            • Work with Admissions marketing and the Batten Scholars program to help recruit applicants who have tech sector experience, interests, or aspirationsIn addition to the above, Senior Director level responsibilities include:
              • Utilize more fully developed expertise and thought leadership to take on initiatives that are more complex
              • Apply skills to solve most problems without review, and latitude to devise the approach and method to performing initiatives
              • Perform long-term assignments with minimal supervisory intervention, seeking assistance when significant deviations are proposed, or when unprecedented problems arise
              • Train, serve as a resource, and provide guidance to more junior staff on non-routine problems, processes, and policies
              • Assist senior staff in developing approaches to problem-solving and anticipating issuesEducation and professional experience:
                • Director - Master's Degree with at least seven years of relevant experience. Experience in the technology sector strongly preferred.
                • Senior Director - Master's Degree with at least ten years of relevant experience. Experience will include leading complex projects with minimal supervision and the ability to mentor and motivate junior team members. Experience in the technology sector strongly preferred.
                • Collaborative team player who can work and communicate effectively, respectfully, and professionally with students, faculty, staff, and other important Darden enterprise stakeholders.
                • Demonstrated results for achieving metrics-driven goals through systemic development with educational or similar organizations.
                • Ability to push through strategic initiatives and ensure successful execution against plans and objectives.
                • Ability to translate thoughts and directives from several areas into a cohesive plan of action.
                • Ability to be a self-starter, owning a vision and driving results.
                • Excellent communication skills, especially written.
