Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the
University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine is seeking a
Psychiatry Vice-Chair for Research to provide oversight,
leadership, and guidance in all aspects of the research enterprise
in the Department. Reporting directly to the Department Chair of
Psychiatry, the successful candidate will be a full-time,
tenure-track faculty member at the rank of Associate Professor/Full
Professor and will be a core part of the growing commitment to
clinical excellence, teaching, scholarship, and translational
research within the UVA Department of Psychiatry and

As the Psychiatry Vice-Chair for Research, the successful candidate
will have the opportunity to build and maintain the research
programs within UVA Health Medical Center. Key Duties &
- The Psychiatry Vice-Chair for Research will lead the pursuit of
innovation and excellence in all research activities in the
Department of Psychiatry, provide visionary oversight of
departmental research programs, and collaborate with departmental
faculty in associated Centers and Institutes.
- The Psychiatry Vice-Chair for Research will report directly to
the Chair. The Vice Chair will provide recommendations to the Chair
regarding directions for new research programs; development and
implementation of a strategic plan for research; on recruitment of
new faculty; and on mechanisms for funding the research
infrastructure. Issues of immediate concern related to the research
programs will be reported to the Chair.
- Mentorship/Educational curricula: Establish, monitor, and
provide direct research mentorship in research development programs
for psychiatry faculty and residents including clinical research
trials, and specialty research in child psychiatry, telepsychiatry,
and addictions; promote research opportunities; organize and
advance intra-and interdepartmental, interdisciplinary, and
intercollegiate research efforts; participate in the professional
development of all research faculty; and provide assessment of
individual faculty research and funding as part of the annual
faculty evaluation process.
- Administrative responsibilities include: Measure progress
through yearly goals and an annual report to the Chair; work with
Grant Administrator and finance team to prepare a budget for
departmental research programs; manage research operations
including creating a guide for acquisition and allocation of space
and shared equipment; direct the process of new research faculty
recruitment; develop and communicate approved departmental policies
and practices related to the research missions; oversight of
research regulatory compliance; assessment of new research program
proposals and evaluation of existing programs; and participate in
relevant and appropriate committees in the Department of
Psychiatry, School of Medicine, Health System, and cross-Grounds.
The Psychiatry Vice-Chair for Research will work with the Grants
Administrator to oversee, analyze, and if needed, develop
recommendations for departmental infrastructure required for
effective pre- and post-grant accounting and administration, and
for streamlined proposal development.
- Submit grant proposals and maintain external funding to support
> 50% of the salary of the Psychiatry Vice-Chair for
- Rotate as clinical attending on assigned resident services,
provide care to individual patients, and take assigned call. Salary
and academic rank for this position will be commensurate with the
applicant's experience and academic background. UVA offers generous
compensation and benefits packages. How Do You Qualify?:
- A Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree or equivalent.
- Current Board Certification in General Psychiatry.
- Unrestricted Commonwealth of Virginia Medical License (current
or eligible).Professional Qualifications/Experience
- Five (5) years' experience conducting extensive research in
serious mental illness is required.
- Five (5) years' experience as a practicing Psychiatry
- Demonstrated extensive research and research program
development and leadership experience.
- History of successful local, national, and international
- Demonstrated success in mentoring early career scientists as
evidenced by an outstanding record of publication.Application
