Position Description: Position Summary How w ould you like to work in an organization where pushing the boundaries of humankind ’ s knowledge of the universe is out of this world? What about support ing world-class instruments, including the Very Large Array (VLA) in New Mexico, the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), and with European and Asian partners, the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile? Have a solid grasp on database operations? Then we want you! We are ramping up our recruitment efforts in order to attract an experienced, capable technical administrator to become part of a small, but dynamic team of system administrators who support the North American ALMA Science Center (NAASC), located at NRAO headquarters on the ground s of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. Come join t he National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) as a full-time systems administrator to support NAASC . Some travel, possibly international, is expected at the 5-10% level. Interaction with the CIS Unix teams at multiple sites, and with our ALMA partners in Chile, Japan, and Germany via digital teleconferencing (including audio and/or video) is essential in this role. Job Duties Summary Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: • Support for the ALMA Oracle database servers at the NAASC, including Golden Gate based synchronization with the master database system in Santiago, Chile; • Work collaboratively with systems administrators at several geographically dispersed locations; • Perform as an integral part of the CIS team including helpdesk ticket triage; • Respond to incidents reported by the NAASC staff in a timely manner. Work Environment Work is typically performed in a n office setting within a research or development environment; the systems administrator works both independently and as part of a diverse team. Position Requirements: Minimum Education Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering or related fields or an equivalent combinat ion of education and experience maybe considered in lieu of Bachelor’s degree. Minimum Experience Two years in a technical, preferably database oriented role in information systems. Preferred Experience Expertise with Oracle databases preferred, though sufficient experience with Postgres and/or MySQL would be acceptable. Experience working in a technical, scientific, or higher education research environment is preferred. Competency Summary • Technical background in a heteregeneous environment, including Linux Servers and workstations; • Exposure to and some proficiency in virtualization using OVM or KVM. • Fluency and comfort with use of the command line for system interaction and management. • Exposure to high performance and/or high throughput computing (HPC/HTC) as well as knowledge of high performance filesystems such as Lustre would be distinct advantages. Physical Working Conditions Work is typically performed in a research environment supporting systems for external observers. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently sits at a desk, uses a personal computer, telephone, and other standard office equipment; the ability to climb stairs is required. The employee is required to bend, reach, and must have finger dexterity. The employee is required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus. May occasionally work at high altitudes.
