Facilities Management (FM) supports the University of Virginia's wide range of research, academic and patient care programs. With over 1,200 employees dedicated to excellence, Facilities Management is responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair and maintenance of U.Va.'s buildings, infrastructure, and grounds as well as other University-owned and leased properties.

We are currently seeking a Construction Superintendent for our Construction & Renovation Services team. The Construction Superintendent coordinate and schedule all construction activities for projects assigned. The scope of our projects can range from a few thousand dollars to over three million dollars. The incumbent oversees the procurement of materials and services, and implementation documents to ensure quality workmanship. In addition to regular job site visits, the employee develops and maintains project logs, including documents for small or large renovation projects and assists architects and engineers to develop project reviews for code compliance, application, and constructability. Excellent technical knowledge of building trades and understanding of the construction process will be essential. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated and have a positive attitude. Strong communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with contractors, coworkers, supervisors, customers, and team members to convey information clearly and appropriately will be required. Incumbent must have Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and Powerpoint for this position.

Duties Include:

  • Manage day-to-day activities to meet project milestones and ultimately meet or beat the project completion date.
  • Identify, assess, and communicate potential change orders or design change requirements.
  • Interaction with clients and stakeholders on a regular basis, assessing their concerns and addressing them appropriately.
  • Maintain daily logs of construction progress.
  • Daily inspection of construction site cleanliness, compliance with building codes and safety.
  • Lead weekly meetings with trades and contractors to plan the upcoming week.
  • Produce two-week look-ahead schedules, which include details of all the work to be carried out and the order of activities.
  • Help set up all inspections, obtain documents, and ensure the quality of work prior to each inspection.
  • Study job specifications and plans to determine appropriate construction methods and be able to explain the plan to team members, subcontractors, and clients.
  • Request and write RFI's, review submittals, and ensure timely and accurate responses and execution.
  • Identify the elements of the project likely to have constructability issues and coordination problems prior to beginning construction of the project.
  • Ensure project documentation and reports are complete.
  • Attend all necessary job site meetings, whether onsite or offsite.
  • Manage the punch lists and close-out of the project.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience: A minimum of four years of experience in commercial construction, architecture, engineering, construction management or related field.
  • Licensure: Valid Driver's License.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Powerpoint

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional experience in commercial construction project management including coordination of scheduling, meetings, and estimating.
  • Experience in Microsoft Project

For this position, the selected candidate will need to complete the required background checks, which may include a health screen prior to their start date.

Anticipated hiring range : $58,000 - $64,000

Physical Demands:

Construction Superintendents are required to drive, walk, climb stairs, and sit for sustained periods of time keyboarding to perform their jobs.
