This is a critical moment in the University of Virginias
human resources evolution. Several years ago, the University
embarked on a series of ambitious changes for HR that will have an
impact in the coming decade. The University, along
with many other institutions of higher education, is facing a
dramatic generational turnover in faculty and staff that began
several years ago and is projected to continue for the foreseeable
future. This is an opportunity to build upon a fully integrated
total rewards platform at the University and to help shape UVAs
The Senior Director, Total Rewards is a strategic role
designed to manage best-in-class service to support the University.
This position is responsible for leading and overseeing all
strategic initiatives across total rewards, serving a broad
spectrum of UVA stakeholders and customers.
The Senior Director, Total Rewards leads a division of
the IMPACT and Decision Support Community of
Expertise at UVA, overseeing the strategic
direction and administration of benefits, compensation, well-being,
and faculty and staff employee assistance (FEAP). The Senior
Director is charged with ensuring the organization has the
capability and capacity to execute the strategic direction of the
business, as well as the willingness to integrate feedback quickly
to adapt to the customer.
Successful delivery of this critical role contributes to
an engaging organizational environment that motivates, attracts,
and retains a diverse and high-performing University workforce. The
Senior Director will report to the AVP of IMPACT and Decision
Support and manage a high-performance team responsible for the

The Senior Director, Total Rewards will build on the total
rewards brand in support of the UVA strategic
plan and UVA HR strategic plan, aligning programming and
actions with the brand and connecting it with employees. The Senior
Director will oversee the full range of total rewards programs and
key processes, managing associated schedules and
Additionally, the Senior Director will reinforce priorities and
coordinate program delivery with other initiatives across HR. The
Senior Director will both provide advice and render opinions to the
AVP of IMPACT and Decision Support, as well as other leaders across
the broader University community as required and requested. The
Senior Director will serve as a subject matter expert across a
broad spectrum of total rewards topics, leading practices and
alternatives to address issues and challenges. The following
are key priority areas for the Senior Director, Total Rewards
Set the Direction/Plan
Develop and execute strategy and guiding principles for total
rewards, including compensation, employee assistance, benefits, and
Design and oversee all total rewards programs, aligning as
Develop annual budget projections for all rewards programs.
Manage all third-party vendors for compensation, benefits, and
wellness, including those responsible for market surveys or
compensation software and market pricing tools.
Ensure and oversee systematic audit in both compensation and
Direct the appropriate compensation, employee assistance,
benefits, and wellness inputs for the HR technology solution and
participate in technology programming and upgrades.
Oversee and guide the total rewards plan execution to ensure
goals are attained and service improved.
Hold touch-point meetings with individual leaders to review
performance and budgets and address new topics. Offer counsel and
request corrective action as required. Intervene, if necessary, to
drive improvements and ensure, as required, necessary coordination
and collaboration with other functions and customers.
Develop LEAN management skillsets within the total rewards team
with the goal of applying these skills to achieve continuous
improvement within the division.
Establish consistency and cross-functional collaboration while
accounting for unique differentiators across HR Centers of
Direct leaders to foster regular, open, and ongoing
communications through structured checkpoints with HR business
partners and other key stakeholders to obtain feedback on service
and provide summary updates on value delivered. Guide and support
Address and arbitrate escalated customer issues and resolve
competing priorities to achieve win-win outcomes. Proactively
monitor for potential escalation issues.
Identify and pursue initiatives to build a strong service
culture. Solicit information on and lead opportunities to
strengthen employee engagement and promote a culture of diversity
Manage expectations with the AVP, HR executive team, COE
leaders, and customers.
Create a positive team environment and inspire others to do
their best by celebrating successes and exhibit an optimistic
outlook toward contributions. Encourage team members to express
points of view, communicate openly and honestly, take initiative,
and provide feedback on risks and opportunities.
Establish clear and reasonable stretch goals for total rewards
leaders and departments.
Actively promote a culture of accountability and growth.
Ensure total rewards leaders provide guidance and support for
employee development to their teams.
Initiate and lead, as appropriate, cross-functional workstreams
to improve HR services. Support total rewards teams access required
resources, information, and collaboration opportunities.
Execute on the University-wide HR strategic plan.
The successful candidate possesses a demonstrated record of
inspiring and accomplished leadership in complex environments with
the highest level of commitment to advancing the mission of total
rewards. They will have exceptional personal and professional
integrity. This individual will have a high level of personal
self-confidence with genuine humility while being an active

Minimum 5-7 years of total rewards leadership and progressive HR
Strong familiarity in the various total rewards disciplines,
including benefits, employee assistance, compensation, and

Experience managing a broad total rewards function that serves a
Experience working for a higher education and/or healthcare
Successful track record of verbal and written
Bachelors degree in related field; masters preferred.
Certifications: PHR/SHRM-SCP or functional equivalent
