Job Description:

To manage daily operations of the Sterile Processing & Surgical Supply Department at University of Virginia Health System (including planning, organizing, staffing and monitoring of work quality). Provide leadership and direction in the development and implementation of organization-wide instrument sterilization policies, procedures and processes. Effectively utilize available and developing technology to improve operations and reduce costs. This position reports to the Director, Central Sterile Services. The manager is responsible for assuring that instrumentation, supplies and other resources are available in a timely manner to support surgical services and other areas dependent upon them.

  • Assures that the standards of operation of the department comply with the standards set by regulatory agencies, such as the state Department of Health, Joint Commission and others. Works closely with service center leadership in the development of operation standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Develops and implements departmental performance improvement activities and assures ongoing staff participation. Reviews feedback from customers (i. e. Main OR, OPSC), responds, compiles, and analyzes support data and implements procedural changes as appropriate.
  • Provides direct supervision to a variety of SPD personnel residing in several different functional areas within the hospital. Provides orientation and all aspects of training. Hires, evaluates performance, and provides corrective action as necessary. Reviews and approves time off requests, completes payroll, monitors attendance and tardiness, interprets hospital policies and ensures adequate coverage for all areas of responsibility.
  • Assigns and prioritizes workload; evaluates, and standardizes operating procedures and effectively troubleshoots and resolves issues as they arise. Informs staff of inter- and intra- departmental policy and procedure changes.
  • Establishes internal inventory levels and maintains levels in accordance with set standards and in coordination within using units within the hospital; establishes par level stocks and monitors them for proper utilization. Supervises the retrieval, editing, and storage of requisitions to ensure proper handling.
  • Acts as a champion of the SPM Instrument Tracking System. Performs some system administrator duties and supervise others who work on the system. Utilize the system's reporting capabilities to identify opportunities for improvement within the department.
  • Works with departmental IT staff to assess/recommend new information technologies and how they might be applied to improve the efficiency of the department.
  • Acts as the liaison to other hospital units or departments in regards to sterilization activities. Attends and participates in hospital committee meetings as appropriate (i. e. Infection Control Committee and Safety Committee).
  • Works closely with leadership to develop and maintain fiscal reporting, annual operating and capital budgets. Monitors budget performance during fiscal year, verifying accuracy in monthly budget statements. Resolves discrepancies and reporting errors as they are discovered.
  • Ensures the physical environment is maintained. Establishes and enforces fire and safety regulations for the area, following established protocols, and ensuring compliance with JCAHO, OSHA and Hospital guidelines.
  • In coordination with Clinical Engineering and other departments establishes a preventative maintenance program for Central Sterile Processing equipment and maintains adequate inventory of equipment to meet hospital use requirements.
  • Attends and participates in hospital/departmental meetings. Attends seminars and training sessions necessary to maintain appropriate level of professional competence.
  • Creates user support teams, develops and conducts user training at multiple levels. Responds to and resolves customer service complaints.
  • Makes recommendations and assists leadership in the procurement of medical/surgical supplies and equipment.
  • Identify own areas for development and actively seeks opportunities to strengthen and expand skills and abilities.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Position Compensation Range: $69,201.60 - $110,718.40 Annual

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelors Degree

Experience:Three years management or supervisory experience within sterile processing

Licensure:Certification as CRCST or above through IAHCSMMORcertification as CSPDT or above through CBSPD.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping, reaching (overhead, extensive, and repetitive); Repetitive motion: computer keyboard. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 50 - 100lbs. May be exposed to noise, radiation, radioactive materials, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.
