Job Description:

Lab and Research Technician 2 employees provide increasingly complex technical support for projects and may engage in increasingly complex scientific experiments. May handle more sophisticated administrative and logistical tasks. Lab and Research Technician 2 employees operate under supervision with a degree of independence when following set protocols and procedures.

The Department of Psychology at the University of Virginia is hiring a Laboratory Technician to conduct research into the development and function of neural circuits underlying auditory perception (please see the lab website at https://meliza.org). The successful candidate will be self-motivated, attentive to detail, and capable of working independently; and will assist in a variety of day-to-day research activities, including (but not limited to) the following: small animal surgery (e.g., stereotaxic injections, electrode implantation), husbandry, and genotyping; tissue processing for electrophysiology or immunofluorescence; maintaining lab supplies and equipment; breeding colony management; developing and maintaining custom lab software; training, documentation, and animal protocol management.

Experience in one or more of these areas is strongly preferred. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

  • Participate in research work involving experiments with animals to include care and feeding, cage cleaning and sanitization, and observation during post-operative or treatment periods.
  • Coordinate and participate in a variety of routine technical duties by providing assistance to research staff in testing, determinations, and experiments.
  • Assist in evaluating research methods, procedures, and techniques, based on established objectives.
  • May perform certain surgical procedures on small lab animals.
  • Assist with training other staff members on procedures; may supervise students or volunteers.
  • Assist Principal Investigators and senior staff in developing new strategies and techniques for experimentation.
  • Assist Principal Investigators with data management, software development, and other computational support tasks.
  • Provide routine, technical, and administrative support to research projects.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

This full-time position will remain open until filled.

This is a restricted position contingent on continued funding.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Associate's degree

Experience: At least 2 years of lab experience which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.

Experience Preferred: Up to four years of experience in one or more of the following is preferred: small animal surgery, husbandry, or operant behavior; molecular biology; histopathology or immunofluorescence; intracellular or extracellular electrophysiology; computer programming in Python, C/C++, or JS

Licensure: None.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
