Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of
Virginia is seeking Biostatistician. Position collaborates with
faculty and members in the Department of Public Health Sciences in
the Division of Translational Research and Applied Statistics, as
well as other investigators in the UVA Cancer Center and School of
Medicine, on multiple clinical and basic science research projects.
The person conducts programming assignments, writes and reviews
code, maintains and modifies programs, and tests and documents
modifications. The incumbent also analyzes program performance, and
takes action if needed and consults with departmental users,
collaborates on and supports research projects, providing study
specific status reports, and research publication and grant
This is a professional staff position in the Department of
Public Health Sciences. The staff person participates in research
conducted through the Department of Public Health Sciences across
departments in the School of Medicine. The individual in the
position is expected to be sufficiently mature to manage their time
with minimal supervision. The individual is also expected to be
able to prioritize between multiple concurrent tasks as research
needs and study demands dictate. The incumbent must have individual
initiative and largely work independently, although with weekly
status review of his/her work and joint determination of overall
priorities with supervisory faculty.
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Degree: Master degree or equivalent experience in Biostatistics,
Data Science, Computer Science, or a related field.
Required Experience: Some - up to 4 years
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Strong communication skills.
Ability to manage his/her time with minimal supervision.
Ability to prioritize between multiple concurrent tasks as
research needs and study demands dictate.
Ability to work independently to perform programming tasks,
select and apply appropriate programming methods, and ensure
his/her work meets a high standard of quality and

Incumbent is required to have a basic understanding of his/her
discipline including all required certifications as well as a basic
understanding of the business environment of a large university

Incumbent should have basic skills in software engineering and
development and knowledgeable of multiple programming languages,
technologies and application areas. Incumbent should have basic
knowledge of established programming procedures and programming
language; computer flow-charts and of programming logic and codes;
current technological developments/trends in area of expertise; and
customer service standards and procedures. Incumbents must have
ability to identify computer problems and coordinate hardware
and/or software solutions; implement and troubleshoot programming
changes and modifications; write basic technical instructions in
the use of programs and/or program modifications; communicate with
and interpret the operational requirements of end-users;
investigate and analyze information and draw conclusions; process
computer data and format and generate reports; and analyze business
requirements and technical requests.
Required Computer Applications:
- Programming experience in at least one of SAS, R or Stata
A minimum of one year of experience in programming and basic
knowledge of statistical application. Relevant experience as a
student may be considered.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Biostatistical and Epidemiologic analysis experience using
relevant statistical methods is preferred.
Experience managing, analyzing, summarizing, and visualizing
large datasets is preferred.
Front-end web development or r-shiny
- Ability to query and navigate large databases
Preferred Computer Applications:
Experience with REDCap
Experience in multiple programming/ statistical languages
preferred (including R, SAS, Stata, SPSS, Matlab, Julia).
Experience with LaTeX and/or Markdown
- Git or similar version control system
