The Department of Cell Biology at the University of Virginia
School of Medicine is seeking a Research Scientist to work in the
laboratory of Dr. Karen Hirschi. The focus of their research is to
understand the molecular regulation of blood and blood vessel
development. Within this focus, the Hirschi Lab is establishing a
collaborative initiative: The Developmental Genomics Center. This
Center will be the scientific hub for collaborative research
between clinicians, bioinformaticians and experimental biologists
to pursue cutting-edge research in developmental biology. The
Hirschi lab will manage and coordinate the center, being the
point-of-contact for collaborative investigators and performing
The Research Scientist will serve as the lead bioinformatician
for the Developmental Genomics Center, and support the experimental
research performed in the Center under the supervision of the
Principal Investigator (PI - Dr. Hirschi) and other research staff.
This individual must be highly collaborative and well versed in the
analysis of one or more high-throughput sequencing or "omics"
approaches, such as RNA single-cell sequencing approaches. The
incumbent will be expected to: independently perform bioinformatics
data analysis using internally developed tools, as well as open
source and third-party genomics software and prediction algorithms;
develop computational approaches including deep learning to analyze
genomic, transcriptomic and proteomic patterns associated with
developmental biological models; and work with other computational
and experimental lab members and collaborators to turn new findings
into experimentally and computationally testable hypotheses.
The incumbent will attend bi-weekly meetings with the PI to
discuss progress in the Developmental Genomics Center, lab
management issues, and results from experiments. In addition, the
incumbent will attend bi-weekly Hirschi Lab Meetings and the
Developmental Genomics Center Seminar Series. The incumbent will
work under supervision, independently and ethically, document all
research data appropriately, and assist other members of the lab
Education: Ph.D. or terminal degree in computer science,
physical sciences or biological sciences with demonstrated
proficiency in bioinformatics, data analysis and visualization (R
and/or Python, lineage projection programs such as PHATE).
Experience: Skills in working with large datasets and developing
tools and algorithms for analysis of large datasets is required.
Background in genomics, MS-based proteomics or network science is a
plus. Preferably at least three years of experience with
computational biology and data analysis.

independently and collaboratively.
