National Radio Astronomy ObservatoryPosition Description: Position SummaryThe National Radio Astronomy Observatorys (NRAO) Office of Diversity & Inclusion is seeking a part-time Project Lead to coordinate an exciting, innovative project designed to teach upper-level high school and college students about the electromagnetic spectrum (EMS), including an interactive experience with amateur radio, with particular focus on broadening the excitement of amateur radio among BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ students.The ideal candidate will have experience in the EMS and/or amateur radio and background in developing educational programs, including the development of college-level courses. Other skills include demonstrated experience managing multiple project deliverables, working collaboratively as part of a team, and shiftingpriorities as needed. The ideal candidate will be a strong writer, an independent worker, and comfortable with occasional ambiguity.Given our focus on diversifying the amateur radio community, it is particularly important that this new team member brings lived experience and/or demonstrated understanding of the challenges faced by under-represented minoritized (URM) students in STEM spaces. This will be a domestic remote work arrangement.In addition to competitive pay, NRAO provides excellent paid time off benefits (vacation and sick leave). No contribution is required of the employee; we also offer an optional supplemental, tax-deferred plan for employee retirement contributions.Job Duties SummarySpecific activities may include, but are not limited to, the following:Develop a 9-month curriculum (likely, the equivalent of two 3-credit college courses) on the electromagnetic spectrum, with a focus on amateur radioCollaborate with team members to deliver the course to pilot groupsCollaborate with web/platform developer to offer the courses on the Superknova platform.Write, edit, and produce a set of documents that describe the project and make it possible for other groups (e.g., ham radio clubs) to offer the course.Write reports that describe the project, its deliverables, and its outcomes.Carry out all of the responsibilities listed above following the mission statement of NRAO.Does not supervise any staff, but may plan and coordinate the work of volunteers and colleagues.Will need to prioritize tasks in the absence of specific instructions and make day-to-day decisions within the scope of work assignments.Work EnvironmentWork is typically performed in an office setting within a research or development environment.
