The University of Virginia's Department of Student Health and Wellness, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is seeking to hire a full-time mental health professional for the position of Staff Psychotherapist - Embedded in the School of Law and Darden School of Business. The Staff Psychotherapist - Embedded is a staff member of CAPS and will join other CAPS staff members already housed on UVA North Grounds within UVA's School of Law and Darden School of Business. This role will serve three days/week at the School of Law and two days/week at Darden, for a combined total of 40 hours/week. This role will collaborate with faculty, staff and administrators to provide outreach and consultation at both Law and Darden. Competitive candidates will have experience working with multicultural populations and/or graduate students. Job responsibilities include providing triage, diagnostic and developmental assessments, brief psychotherapy, group therapy, and crisis support. In addition, the position involves making referrals to and coordinating care with CAPS psychiatric providers as well as facilitating referrals for students wishing to connect with psychological and psychiatric services in the community. This position may also provide supervision and didactic seminars to trainees in CAPS' APA-accredited doctoral internship in Health Service Psychology.Responsibilities include:

  • Staff Psychotherapists provide individual and group counseling and psychotherapy, crisis intervention, and clinical consultation. They manage outreach initiatives and programming. They conduct clinical interviews to obtain a comprehensive patient overview and discuss educational history, physical and mental health issues, social factors, substance use.
  • Conduct screening and comprehensive diagnostic psycho-educational evaluations.
  • Provide consultative and resource services to health-care providers, as well as University faculty.
  • Provide direct supervision and interactive teaching to trainees in psychology.
  • Lead business and staff meetings, committees and special projects.

      • Licensed as a mental health professional in the Commonwealth of Virginia (or license-eligible; must be licensed within 6 months of hire). (Must provide proof of credentials as part of the pre-hire process.)
      • Masters Degree in Counseling or Social Work or PhD/PsyD in Clinical or Counseling Psychology
      • At least four years of professional experience providing psychotherapy to adults or adolescents including a minimum of 1 year of experience with risk assessment and crisis intervention
      • Knowledge and competency in culturally informed therapeutic approaches
      • Experience with brief models of psychotherapy
      • Crisis management skills, including experience with risk assessment, safety planning and facilitating inpatient hospitalization
      • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary treatment teamPREFERRED EXPERIENCE

        • Providing outreach, including experience developing presentations and speaking to diverse audiences
