Title: Crew Leader State Role Title: Transportation Operator III Hiring Range: $40,000 - $63,413 Pay Band: 3 Agency: VA Dept of Transportation Location: Free Union AHQ Agency Website: https://virginiadot.org/jobs/ Recruitment Type: General Public - G Job Duties The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), Culpeper District is seeking a skilled and motivated operator/leader to serve as a working Crew Leader at the Free Union Area Headquarters located in Albemarle County, Virginia.In this position, you will work closely with supervisors to identify maintenance needs, develop schedules, plan work and resources, and execute work assignments by identifying and assigning manpower, ordering materials, and determining the equipment needed to accomplish the job. You will also:Provide guidance and training to crew members involved in clearing drainage, removing debris, cutting brush, and roadway patching.Lead crews daily work and in the set-up of work zones, and performing traffic control, focusing on worksite safety.Operate equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, graders, rollers, loaders and train crew members on equipment.Continuously monitor operations to ensure employee--s safety and work complies to agency standards. Champion safety at all times.Maintain records of work performed.Serve as a backup supervisor as needed.This position is required to work during emergencies. You will respond to emergenciesblocking roads, such as traffic accidents and debris to provide traffic control and perform maintenance activities to reopen the road. During severe weather, you will prepare for, and operate equipment for now and ice removal and other types of hazardous weather affecting road conditions. Minimum Qualifications Knowledge of highway maintenance and/or construction practices and procedures.Basic experience in directing and training others, with the ability to lead operations.Basic knowledge of inventory procedures.Skill in the use of computers and software applications.Experience in keeping basic records.Skill operating and maintaining equipment used in highway or construction activities.Ability to perform manual labor.Ability to use hand and power tools.Ability to interpret and apply work zone safety and traffic control manual guidelines.Valid Commercial Driver--s License required. Additional Considerations Emergency operations experience to include snow removal, storm damage and accident clean up.Experience preparing computerized reports/records.Advanced experience in roadway and roadside maintenance activities.Class A CDL preferred.Possession of DEQ Erosion and Sediment Control Responsible Land Disturber Certification. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations requires entry-level drivers (who are seeking to take the skills test to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade a CDL, or obtain a hazardous materials endorsement) to complete a FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles can grant a CDL or endorsement. The ELD training course is comprised of 160 hours, on average. VDOT is willing to assist with course enrollment and payment upon acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.Work requires unrestricted mobility and the ability to work in all types of weather, terrain and standing for long periods.
