Job Duties

Do you enjoy working hands-on? Are you knowledgeable of geologic concepts, terms, and practices? Do you have experience using ArcGIS to build and manage geodatabases and maps? Then look no further! The Virginia Department of Energy, Geology and Mineral Resources program, is seeking a GIS Specialist to manage digital geologic data and produce digital geologic maps, geodatabases, and reports that support planning and construction projects, economic development, and the mitigation of geologic and environmental hazards. The successful candidate will serve as a project leader, build and maintain geodatabases, assemble and maintain maps and datasets to support mapping projects, develop GIS tools and processes to improve geologic map production workflow, and improve the availability of digital geologic map information.

Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate should have the following knowledge, skills, abilities and experience in order to qualify for this position:
---Ability to effectively use personal computers and software programs such as Microsoft Office Suite in a Windows environment
---Ability to handle multiple responsibilities, organize tasks, and prioritize workflow
---General understanding of concepts and terms related to structural geology, stratigraphy, and petrology
---Ability to work independently and as a team member, pay attention to detail, and complete assignments within established timeframes
---Effective oral and written communication skills with the ability to proofread
---Ability to provide timely assistance to customers
---Experience using ArcGIS to build and manage relational geodatabases and develop map products
---A valid driver's license with a good driving record

The individual accepted for employment will have to pass a drug test and successfully complete reference checks as part of the Virginia Energy pre-employment process.

---Experience with geologic maps or data is preferred
