Position Description: Position Summary The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is seeking a self-starting, and enthusiastic Information Systems professional to join our computing and Information Services division with the express purpose of planning and executing our Cyber Security Program. The desired candidate will have a solid grasp on all aspects of cyber security, from the desktop through the application layer and operating system down to the network and physical layers. This new position will be heavily involved in the design, implementation, and monitoring of a significantly enhanced Security Plan for the Observatory. The successful candidate will report directly to Observatory Information Security Officer, and will work closely with Systems Administration professionals at multiple sites in a technical/scientific environment dedicated to enabling the best possible science for our observers. Job Duties Summary Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: Planning and deployment of an upgraded security plan for the Observatory; Work collaboratively with systems administrators at several geographically dispersed locations; Perform as an integral part of the existing Computing Security Committee; this will involve many functions, such as reviewing policies, planning for and implementation of new controls and participation in policy-mandated recurring activities, Respond to threats and emergency security incidents in a timely manner, including forensics; Identify, assess, and remediate information security architecture gaps within hardware, Operating Systems, software, and networks across the Observatory's infrastructure; Evaluate, assess, and provide recommendations on new products and technologies relevant to the Observatory's overall Cyberinfrastructure security posture. Position Requirements: Minimum Education Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of experience in Computer Science or Engineering. Minimum Experience Three years in a technical role relating to information systems security. Preferred Experience Experience in a Technical, Scientific or Higher Education research environment is preferred. Competency Summary Strong technical background in heterogeneous environment, in particular with Linux and Windows desktop servers, Cisco routers, firewalls, and virtualization infrastructure. Demonstrated expertise in two or more of the following: Data Security, Information System Forensics, Incident Response & Analysis, System Log Analysis, Information Systems Operations, Network Security, Systems & Application Security, Vulnerability Management, Penetration Testing. Operational experience with intrusion detection, network monitoring and assessment tools such as BRO/ZEEK, NMAP, Nessus, Metasploit, is preferred.
