Job Description

Apex Clean Energy is seeking an Energy Storage Analyst to help provide the technical deliverables to support the design, development and optimization of energy storage projects. Apex is rapidly expanding our portfolio of energy storage projects that we originate and develop and are seeking a hard-working energy storage analyst who thrives in an entrepreneurial, analytically driven environment to support these efforts. As an Energy Storage Analyst on our newly formed Storage Team, this represents an opportunity to jump into the dynamic and growing energy storage market.

In this role you will responsible for the preliminary system design and optimization, degradation and augmentation modeling, conceptual project site layouts, various deliverables of the project management process, and the preliminary engineering that supports permitting, interconnection, and procurement.

Our ideal candidate will come into this role with a genuine passion for renewable energy, education in a relevant field, and at least 3 years of relevant experience designing and analyzing battery-based energy storage projects. You are proficient at providing the technical deliverables required to support the development of our storage projects, are well-versed in competitive analysis of regional markets, and have no problem organizing, planning, and meeting deadlines for large multi-faceted projects. Our ideal candidate is a personable self-starter who thrives as a technical resource and can operate in an environment that requires flexibility and adaptation to constant change, shifting demands, and moving timelines.

Office Location: Apex's headquarters in Virginia or our satellite office in Minnesota. Remote work may be approved for the right candidate

Primary Responsibilities
Provide technical deliverables to support the development of energy storage projects
Perform initial system design and optimization given desired use case, including storage technology selection, capacity and duration sizing, and augmentation strategy
Perform degradation and augmentation modeling
Create conceptual project site layouts
Outline and manage technical inputs to project schedules
Provide project cost estimates, including upfront capex and long-term OPEX
Perform initial engineering to support permitting, interconnection and procurement
Serve as the technical resource for Apex's Project Development Team; working closely to develop solutions and handle any technical challenges that arise during the various phases of the project
Develop the specifications for storage equipment and contractors
Provide technical support to procurement of equipment and contractors
Evaluate technologies and manufacturers for capital and operational efficiencies. Research equipment forward price curves and emerging technologies
Monitor relevant industry, federal, state, and local standards relating to storage system deployment, including building and fire codes, UL, IEC, etc.
Develop innovative tools and approaches to optimize levelized cost of storage
Perform regional market and competitive analysis as requested
Identify new greenfield standalone energy storage project opportunities, considering potential use cases and commercialization opportunities
Create and maintain project control tools for assigned projects, including maps, databases, budgets, and schedules
Provide development support through engineering, procurement, construction, and financing as required
Responsible for the development, review, and technical oversight of all engineering and design of energy storage proposals
Review customer's RFP documents
Having a sound understanding of the technical, performance, and integration of Li-Ion batteries as part of ESS is a plus
Having a sound understanding of Li-Ion battery technology, degradation, packaging, and how it fits in grid connected storage projects is a plus
Provide clients with expertise in the areas of analytic modeling for risk management, asset valuation, resource planning, and renewable integration
Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

To succeed as an Energy Storage Analyst at Apex Clean Energy, you'll need to excel within the following criteria:
Bachelor's Degree required, Master's degree a plus
3-5 years of relevant experience designing battery-based energy storage projects
Experience modeling energy storage projects and performing techo-economic analysis
Experience related to storage market research firms
Experience with utility-scale storage project financing, project development and/or construction
Strong knowledge of solar PV technology and design principles is a plus
Experience in engineering and/or construction of energy storage facilities a plus
Experience working with suppliers of major equipment a plus
Location: Willing and able to work from our Headquarters in Charlottesville, Virginia or our satellite office in Minneapolis, MN. Remote work will be considered for the right candidate.
