Title: Highway Maintenance Crew Member State Role Title: Transportation Operator II Hiring Range: $40,000 - $59,836 Pay Band: 2 Agency: VA Dept of Transportation Location: Cuckoo AHQ Agency Website: https://www.virginiadot.org/jobs/default.asp Recruitment Type: General Public - G Job Duties VDOT Culpeper District is looking for an experienced equipment operator for our Cuckoo AHQ located in Mineral, VA.As a Highway Maintenance Crew Member, you will:Work as part of a team clearing drainage, removing debris, cutting brush, and roadway maintenance. Tasks include installing culvert pipes, grading gravel roads, hauling gravel and debris, roller patching, and a host of other duties needed to maintain Virginia--s roads.Operate equipment such as, but not limited to, dump trucks, backhoes, graders, tar kettles, rollers, loaders, mowing tractors, etc. For each piece of equipment operated, you will complete a pre-trip inspection and maintain equipment for readiness. Use hand and power tools and perform manual labor tasks.This position is required to work during emergencies. You will respond to emergencies blocking roads, such as traffic accidents and debris, provide traffic control and perform activities to reopen the road. During severe weather, you will prepare for, and operate equipment to remove snow and ice, along with working in other types of hazardous weather affecting road conditions. Severe weather shifts are typically 12-hours in length, including after hours, weekends and holidays.You will set up work zones and perform traffic control, focusing on proper work site protection. Possess knowledge of equipment, materials, methods, and procedures used in roadway maintenance or construction. Experience in operating equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, graders, backhoe, etc. Able to read and follow oral and written instructions. Able to perform heavy manual labor, including frequent lifting up to 50 pounds. Skilled in using hand and power tools. Valid driver--s license required at hire. A Commercial Driver--s License and DOT medical card are required within 11 months of employment and maintained thereafter. VDOT is willing to assist with enrollment and payment of a CDL course. Additional Considerations Valid CDL (Class A or B) with appropriate endorsements. Experience in heavy equipment operation. Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs. Experience in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms and accident response and clean-up. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands. Applicants selected for an interview will be required to perform a skills demonstration as part of the interview process.All employees hired without a valid CDL are required to obtain a CDL within 11 months of their hire date. Employees cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations requires entry-level drivers (who are seeking to take the skills test to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade a CDL, or obtain a hazardous materials endorsement) to complete a FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Virginia department of Motor Vehicles can grant a CDL or endorsement. The ELD training course is comprised of 160 hours, on average. VDOT is willing to assist with course enrollment and payment upon acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.Work requires unrestricted mobility and the ability to work in all types of weather, terrain and standing for long periods. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Requires approved safety shoes, which is a reimbursable expense after employment.
