Job location: Charlottesville, VA Employment Type: Full-time Posted data: 2019-04-19 Req: R0005216 The Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) is seeking to fill the position of Radiation Safety Technician as part of the Radiation Safety Program. The incumbent will be responsible for implementing integral programs that support the dynamic research and operations of The University of Virginia and The University of Virginia Medical Center. The Radiation Safety Program's primary objective is to ensure that operations involving radioactive material are conducted according to policies and procedures designed to adequately protect public health and safety and maintain exposures as low as reasonably achievable. Regulatory compliance and consultation on the safe use of radioactive materials and analytical radiation producing equipment are key components of the program. We strive to be responsive to the needs of the University and the individual user. Qualified candidates will have at a minimum, an Associates' degree in the science or physics filed, or have obtained an Associate's degree by the start date. Preferred candidates will have a Bachelor's degree in physics or science field, and experience either working or inspecting in a laboratory setting and working with radioactive materials. Successful candidates will work well in a team, be detail oriented, able to balance multiple projects at a time, be highly reliable, and have the ability to communicate and act professionally with all members of the University community. The Office of Environmental Health and Safety supports professional development and strongly encourages job-related training and educational opportunities. Duties for this position include: Performs radioactive material receipt surveys and associated database entry for radioactive material received at EHS facilities. . Delivers radioactive material to end user. Assists survey team, performs inspections, and determines whether laboratories comply with State regulations. Provides onsite training in instances where laboratories are in noncompliance with the regulations. Count survey swipes, analyzes results and remediates contamination problems bases upon the swipe results. Assist in sampling, counting and analyzing waste bulk radioactive liquid waste. Maintains radioactive material storage area, keeps area clean and orderly, and performs safety inspections. Assists in meetings and/or training including laboratory in-services and the university wide program coordinating lab surveys with housekeeping meetings and in-services. Assist in collecting and processing radioactive waste in accordance with applicable regulations. Performs database entry to ensure that all surveys are performed. May share in the EHS responsibility to respond to after-hours emergencies. Employee must keep lines of communication open and be immediately available and unimpaired to return to work while on call. Perform other duties as prescribed by supervisor(s). Performs all jobs required to maintain the safe and legal function of the Office of Environmental Health & Safety. Required Education: Associate's Degree in the physics or science field. Required Experience: At least one year of experience either working or inspecting in laboratory settings and working with radioactive materials. Required License: Valid, un-restricted Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Virginia Driver's License within 90 days of hire. Ability to obtain the Commercial Driver's License with H classification. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Familiarity with the use of radioactive materials; Familiarity with the federal or state regulations for radioactive materials: Ability to work safely with and around radioactive materials; Ability to use radiation survey meters: Ability to work in a team environment as a collaborative, professional and respectful team member; Ability to communicate effectively with others, both verbally and in writing; Comfortable working in a variety of workspaces including patient care, vivaria, research laboratories and outdoor environments; Ability to analyze data and present findings to stakeholders across the institution; Ability to meet all physical requirements of the position including moderate lifting and standing, sitting and walking for extended periods of time; Ability to work a schedule that may include on-call responsibilities to cover holiday, weekend and after-hour response; and Ability to complete job duties and responsibilities while wearing personal protection equipment (PPE), including a respirator. Required Computer applications: Ability to use the Microsoft Office Suite (including Word, Excel and Access) and experience with basic Internet browsers. Preferred Education: Bachelor's Degree in the physics or science field. Preferred Experience: At least three years of experience working in a university setting including receiving and delivering radioactive materials and performing laboratory inspections. Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (NRRPT) certification Physical Demands: This position requires frequent walking, standing, bending, and crouching as a part of laboratory inspections and consultations. This job also involves occasional sedentary tasks at a desk using a computer.
